St. Sava was consecrated in 1894 and is the first Serbian Orthodox Church on the North American Continent. It was Founded by (Saint) Archimandrite Sebastian Dabovich. St. Sebastians' Relics are laid to rest inside the Church.
When the Church was consecrated it received gifts from Bishop Nikolai from the Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska who presided over the service. Most fascinating of the gifts is the crystal chandelier. It is very fragile and was brought in by covered wagon completely intact. The bell in the tower which rings clear to this day was another.
St. Sava's congregation is approximately 40 to 50 every Sunday.
President Slavkos' (Sam's) father was a hard rock miner in the local gold mines and his family were pioneers of the church.
The star in the circle on the steeple is in honor of the United States which allows religious freedom to the congregation and faithful of St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church.
